The Importance of the Grounding Cord

Grounding is vital for sealing off emotional leaks and maintaining balance. The grounding cord serves as an energetic connection between your body and the earth, ensuring a healthy flow of energy. Visualising this connection enables you to draw energy up from the ground and release negativity and emotional baggage.

For instance, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that grounding techniques can reduce anxiety by up to 50%. Additionally, this practice helps regulate the vagus nerve, a key player in our nervous system. By engaging with grounding exercises, you may experience increased feelings of safety, calmness, and improved overall well-being.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Somatic Grounding Cord Exercise

Step 1: Find a Comfortable Position

Begin by sitting or lying down in a quiet, comfortable space taking time to feel into the feet, legs & sit bones. Orient yourself to the felt sense of sinking into your body & contact with the earth beneath you. Remove distractions and focus solely on this practice. You might want to grab a red blanket, cushion, stone, rose, sacred image or crystal & some vetiver essential oil 4 a deeper sense of initiation, grounding & earthing.

***Caution - Fear can come up unexpectedly as you build resilience in your anchoring so go slow, listen deeply & use comforting aids or a therapist to hold your hand as you encounter ancestral trauma, fears & even terror that might arise as you sink down.

Step 2: Visualise Your Grounding Cord

Picture a thick, sturdy cord extending from the base of your spine into the earth. Visualise it as a vibrant red colour, symbolising earthy root chakra energy. Allow this cord to burrow deep into the ground, soil & energetic roots providing you with a secure anchor.

Simply rest here for a few minutes , closing the eyes, visualising the energy of this powerful connection strengthening as you relax into the rhythm & gentle hum of the earth body as your own. Switch off your "analyser" and just BE here for this connection.

Affirm " I am safe in my re-connection to the earth"

Notice the area below your sit bones - does the energy open to receive? Explore any opening, bracing, disassociation, distraction, mind wandering & closing that happens. Pay attention to the energetic relationship & space between your sit bones, buttocks, base & the earth. As you start to open to receive you will feel a pulsing sensation.

Step 3: Breathe into Your Energy

Inhale deeply & steadily pulling nurturing energy up through your grounding cord from the earth. As you breathe, visualise this energy flowing through your body, expanding your sense of safety and connection. x 3 breaths.

Breathe up from the earth & into your root to a count of 3, hold at your spinal cord 3, exhale 3 penetrating &/or dropping your roots deep into the earth's core. x 7 breaths

When you exhale, surrender any negative emotions, excessive fire, anger, or tension. Envision these feelings traveling down your grounding cord and being absorbed by the earth. Notice how your sit bones relax, body loosens up, jaw unclenches, heart calms, belly softens, attention drops back into the sofa of the higher mind & note other easeful somatic experiences that show up.

Throughout the week build up to these ratios: Inhale 4, Hold 4, Exhale 4 & finally Inhale 6, Hold 12, Exhale 6. As you hold the breath be sure to keep your attention at the base of the spine intentionally softening to allow the energy to stabilise in the root/ base of spine.

It will in it's own time & rhythm start to dance & flow into the hips, pelvis, sexual organs, bladder, low abdomen, soothing & comforting the fertile soil within you. Once this fertile soil within your root & sacral has purified it will slowly & steadily coil up the spine to the gut, heart & brain.

Use the breath compassionately and as an essential mastery exercise to develop a deep connection to your body , mother earth energy and the invisible silent realm.

Step 4: Chant “Voo”

Place 1 x hand on the heart & 1 x hand on the belly. Drop your attention back into the base of the spine, anchor into your grounding cord & now intend your energy down through your spine more deliberately & intentionally with a felt sense of resilience, determination & strength, Softly chant “Voo.” x 5.

Play with more deeper tones, allow the sound to come from your body, base chakra x 5 Deep Voo Sounds. Notice how & where your body fills up with the sound. Can you feel it vibrating? Where does it want to penetrate? How does it move? Let it guide you - it's the feminine asking you to trust her sound, let go & release control.

The sound & vibrations will guide your psyche to surrender more fully to the beat of your soul.

This "Voo" sound resonates with the root chakra, strengthening your grounding cord and deepening your connection with your body. Focus on the vibrations of the chant, allowing them to spread through your being and enhance your awareness of your physical presence.
