How does EMDR work?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapy technique that was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980's.
EMDR is primarily used to help individuals who have experienced trauma, although it has also been used to treat other mental health conditions such as anxiety & phobias.
EMDR is an 8 phase approach to psychotherapy. Although the exact mechanism through which EMDR works is not fully understood, it is believed to involve the stimulation of the brain’s information processing pathways, helping to remove blockages and allowing the brain to process the traumatic memories in a more adaptive way.
